Laser scan altimetric data and digital orthophotos combined have several advantages for the maintenance and updating of highway registers. The data are directly accessible in establishing the state and geometric characteristics of road networks and structures, even in wooded areas. Furthermore, great distances can be quickly covered by aerial surveys, irrespective of traffic conditions. They can also take place at night and cover wide areas adjacent to the main road. Use of laser-scans supplies up-to-date information, manageable in a GIS, which can be integrated with other map data and high resolution digital orthophotos.
